OLD TAURANGA IDENTITY
MISS A. H. MAXWELL’S 87TH BIRTHDAY
(P.A.) TAURANGA, October 4. Known to visitors to Tauranga from all parte of New Zealand, Miss Alice Heron Maxwell, of “The Elms,” celebrated her eighty-seventh birthday today Born in Kilmore, Victoria, on October 4, 1880, where her father was a Presbyterian minister, Miss Maxwell went to Wellington in 1865. The family lived at Wadestown, when theirs was the only house there. Miss Maxwell came to Tauranga 60 years ago, following the deaths of Archdeacon A. N. Brown, a pioneer missionary at the Bay of Plenty, and Mrs Brown, who was Miss Maxwell’s aunt.
The mission house, the Brown’s home, was one of the earliest houses in New Zealand, and has been livfed in continuously for more than 100 years. It is closely linked with the battle of Gate Pa and earlier historical events in the district.
