SECOND DAY AT WINGATUI

RACING

KARTIKEYA BEATS EXCELLENCY DEAD HEATS IN THREE RACES From Our Own Reporter DUNEDIN, October 4. The defeat of the hitherto unbeaten filly Excellency in the Dunedin Guineas by the Riccarton-trained colt Kartikeya marked a day that was full of incidents at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting at Wingatui, which concluded on Saturday. Close finishes were the order of the day, three races resulting in deadbeats, and there was only a head margin in another. The weather was fine but overcast throughout the day, and the track was soft. The attendance was fair, the totalisator handling £48,992 10s compared with £60,378 10s last year, a decrease of £11,386. The total for the two days was £97,919, compared with £95,334 last year, an increase of £2585.

Excellency was backed as if she was unbeatable in the Dunedin Guineas, and started one of the shortest-priced favourites in the history of the race. Her defeat was as surprising as it was decisive, and on the day she failed when put to the test by a colt that is more seasoned and a better stayer. Kartikeya has always given the impression that he would be a high-class three-year-old, and the heavy going that dimmed Excellency’s brilliance allowed him to assert his superior stamina. Excellency was on her toes before the race and sweated freely afterwards. By her appearance, there seemed little doubt that she had done sufficient work, but the keenness she showed in the early stages of the race, ■when she pulled hard, suggested that she needed a race.

After the race her rider, W. J. Broughton, said that she was not good enough on the day. He could see that Kartikeya ■was going just as well turning for home. L. J. Ellis said that Kartikeya was going as well as Excellency at any part of the race after the first furlong, and he decided to make Excellency do her best as soon as they reached the rise at the turn into the straight.

From a good start Excellency soon went to the front, and at the end of a furlong led by three-quarters of a length from Show Boy, with a length and a half to Kartikeya and Coral Arc, and two lengths to Beaugard and Sally Gazelle. Kartikeya moved up on the inside of Show Boy in the next furlong, otherwise there •was little change down the back, Excellency being under a good hold. Turning for home Excellency was two lengths clear, and Coral Arc moved up on the outside of Kartikeya and Show Boy. Kartikeya left the fence just short of the straight entrance and was up on Excellency’s quarter as they straightened up for the run home. Kartikeya soon drew up to Excellency and Broughton drew his ■whip, but Kartikeya had her measure commencing the final furlong and went on to win going away by two lengths. Coral Arc was another six lengths, away third, three lengths ahead of Beaugard. Sally Gazelle and Show Boy followed at intervals. Success Unpopular Showing a complete reversal of his first day’s form. Lord Dundonald finished very strongly under a hard ride to dead-heat with Boolamskee in the Grandstand Handicap. The latter had the run of the race, and though he had the benefit of a 71b allowance, would have been better served by a stronger horseman than his apprentice rider. Lord Dundonald has always done best with the sting out of the ground, and in a truly-run race produced the powerful finishing run that was not forthcoming the previous Saturday. As he returned to scale a small section of the crowd voiced its displeasure at his reversal of form. Lord Dundonald, Boolamskee, and Haneel began best, with Hansel working clear at the end of a furlong and a half to lead from Boolamskee and Lord Dundonald, with Loyal Lady and Brockie, and Joygiver and Eriskay pairing off behind them, and Hakim tailing off. Entering the back straight Joy giver moved up smartly, and with six furlongs to run Hansel still led from Joygiver and Boolamskee, with Lord Dundonald dropping in behind them to be just ahead of Loyal Lady and Brockie, with gaps to Eriskay and Hakim. Along the back Eriskay improved her position a little and Loyal Lady started to give ground, and at the half-mile Hansel was maintaining a strong pace'from Joygiver and Boolamskee, with two lengths to Eriskay and Brockie and the same to Lord Dundonald. Passing the three furlongs Boolamskee moved through on the rails and led into the straight from Hansel. Joygiver, Brockie, Lord Dundonald, going on the outer, and Eriskay. Hansel and Joy giver soon dropped out, and at the furlong Boolamskee was clear, but Lord Dundonald finished 1 strongly and drew .evel in the last stride. Brockie was two lengths back, with three lengths to Eriskay. Then came Hansel, Loyal Lady, and Eriskay, well clear of Hakim. »

A seven-horse field contested the Federal Handicap, in which the veteran, Sterling Lad, always at home in heavy going, took the lead early in the run home and outstayed the pacemaker, Gold Song, to win by a length. Gold Song was first out and when the field settled down was closely followed by Frances, Kiloney. and Sterling Lad, with a gap to Bath Slipper and Grill, the other runner, Batal, quickly tailing off. Except that Frances had dropped back into fourth place and Sterling Lad had moved up on the rails, there was no change to the straight. Frances dropped out as soon as the run home commenced, and coming to the last furlong Sterling Lad was doing better than Gold Song and’ held,-his advantage to the post. Kiloney held on for third, a length and a half back, while Bath Slipper was fourth, another three lengths away. Batal made up a lot of ground over the last three furlongs to finish fifth and was followed by Frances and Grill. Results:— WAKABI HURDLES, Of £350. One mile and three-quarters. 1.
