THE VATICAN AND RUSSIA
Sir, —Since you give such prominence in ‘ ‘The Press to-day to Dr. Garbett’s address, it is. a pity jjou could not tell us more clearly what he said. It is certainly true that “materialistic, Marxian Communism” is opposed to Christianity. In fact, it seeks utterly to destroy it. Since European civilisation is based on Christianity, Communism (not Russia) is its “chief enemy.’’ No one who sincerely believes in Christianity can do anything but oppose Communism with all possible efforts. For this reason it is useless to seek friendship with the Russian Church, which has surrendered itself as a tool of the Communist regime in Russia. The Catholic Church is irreconcilably opposed to Communism, and seeks to convert and enlighten Communists. It has no enmity for Russians or any other people. Prayers are offered for Russia every day m all Catholic Churches.-Yours fe October 2, 1947.
