Five Applications Fail security” council DISAGREES (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9.10 p.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 1. In the Security Council to-day, Mr Warren Austin (United States). strongly opposed the admission of Bulgaria to the United Nations. He said that Bulgaria had threatened international peace by aiding the Greek guerrillas, ana could not bi considered a peaceloving nation. Its Communist regime, he added, denied human rights. The Council way considering applications for membership by Bulgaria, Italy, Hungary, Rumania, and Finland. Hungary, Rumania, and Bulgaria failed to poll the required majority of seven votes, and Russia vetoed the appl{£ati2ns of Ital X and Finland. Mr Gromyko (Russia) said after the voting: ‘ The Soviet delegation cannot take part in the ' unsavoury political game connected with the membership applications. If the question arises in future, either in the Security Council or the General Assembly, tne Soviet will support any proposal for simultaneous admission of those five countries.
