(P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 1. This afternoon his Excellency the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Freyberg) officially opened the New Zealand women’s indoor basketball championships, held at the Sports Centre. The Governoi>General was accompanied by Lady Freyberg. Viscount and Viscountess Addison and the Hop. F. E. Cumming Bruce have left Government House.
Mr Justice Ong]ey wjll arrive in Christchurch from Wellington this morning to preside gt a Atting of the Compensation Court. It was stated gt a meeting ef the ILyttelton Harbour Board yesterday thgt the meeting was probably toe last at which Mr T. H. MeCombs, M.P., would be present. Mr MeCombs said that pressure of other duties made it impracticable for him to attend more than half the board’s meetings, and he would not be a candidate at the forthcoming election. Several members spoke of the work Mr McCombs had dope for the board. Mr McCombs has been a member of the board for nine years.
. A travelling scholarship of the Association of New Zealand Art Societies has been won by Mr Clifford Paul Murray, of Ponsonby, Auckland. There were 18 candidates, *The scholarship is worth £350. ana Mr Murray intends to u se it to visit English art schools and study the old masters in European galleries. Mr Murray is an instructor at the Elam School of Art.—(P.A.)
