INTERFERENCE AT ROSEHILL

PLACINGS ALTERED (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 28. The Clarendon Handicap at the Rosehill meeting was one of the most eventful races run in Sydney for many years. Six horses had their chances ruined through interference in the straight. Lysander and Jocular were placed deadheat first, and Blue Ensign third on a photo finish. Blue Ensign’s connexions protested against Jocular and after an inquiry lasting half an hour, Blue Ensign was placed first equal and Jocular relegated to third. Mulley, rider of Jocular, was suspended for two months. He claims that he rode the last two furlongs with a broken rein. The former New Zealander, beep Sea, was beaten narrowly by Warspite, in the Thompson Quality Handicap. Mr J. Murrell, the owner ->f Deep Sea, claims that the race revealed weaknesses in the Derby field and that his three-year-old may start in the Derby instead of in the Epsom Handicao. After toeing passed by Warspite, Deep Sea challenged again and was in front a few strides past the post. Results:— < CLARENDON HANDICAP, of £6OO, nine furIongs.—LYSANDER 7-2 Sellwoodt and BLUE ENSIGN 7-10 G. Podmoret 1; Jocular 7-6 Mulley 3. There were 20 starters. Dead heat; half a length. Time, Imin 52Jsec. THOMPSON QUALITY HANDICAP, of £800; seven furlongs.—W’AßSPlTE 8-4 Cook 1; Deep Sea 7-9 Williams 2; Murray Stream 8-5 G. Fodmore 3. There were 14 starters. Half a head: neck. Time, Imin 25sec Dividend System Because of an error in the placing of Royal Tor’s name on the totalisator face in the concluding event, the Maruia Handicap, at the Reefton meeting, two place dividends were paid out, though there were tonly actually four numbers operating on the totalisator at the finish, the winner, John o’ London, being bracketed with Dinky Di. Actually there should have been but one dividend. This is not the first occasion that such a position has arisen at West Coast meetings. The rules provide that once a horse’s name appears on the totalisator face, it is virtually regarded as a starter. Chellow Dene Wins

Chellow Dene scored at good odds in the principal event, the Reefton Handicap, on Saturday. Always the leader, ChellQW Dene staved off a late challenge from Dash o’ Dink to win handily by a length and a half, with Velvet Slipper beaten off into third place a length away.Matador who did not strike out freely in the early stages, finished on for fourth just clear of Sir Tague. Trained at Omoto by C. J. Walsh for his Greymouth owner, Mr J. Trowbridge, Chellow Dene is a six-year-old gelded son of Solicitor General from Folk Lore, and has scored most of his successes on the West Coast turning tracks. Wagers Cancelled.—All totalisator betting on the 100,000 dollar winner-take-all race to be held at Belmont Park to-mor-row, between the top money winners, Assault and Armed, has been cancelled because of uncertainty about Assault’s troublesome hoof.—New Vork, Sept. 26.
