BRILLIANT TWO-YEAR-OLD

RACING

MAGICAL WINS DUNEDIN GUINEAS From Our Own Reporter DUNEDIN, September 28. Most impressive of the three Riccartontrained winners on. the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club'S spring meeting was the McLean Stakes winner. Magical, which showed himself to be a class above the early two-year-olds in the South Island when he comfortably beat another Riccarton candidate in Trident. Although three favourites, in Wee Mac, Coral Arc, and Magical, were successful, the vagaries of spring form were apparent in the remaining races, in which the favourites were unplaced. Double figure dividends were returned by Deep Harmony, Dowlair, and Sir Raimond. Totalisator investments amounted to £48,928 10s, against £34,955 10s last year. The meeting was held in fine weather and the track improved as the day wore bn. The Ranfurly Handicap gave Salmon Spear a chance to confirm last season’s impression that he will make a good class handicapper this year when he finished solidly to beat Signal Officer by half a length. With only six runners the race was run at a muddling pace, and it developed into a sprint over the last five furlongs. The favourite, Lord Dundonald, got the worst of the start and at the end of a furlong Salmon ■ Spear had pulled his way to the front and he led out of the straight from Joygiver, Brockie, and Signal Officer, with Lord Dundonald at the rear. The whole field was hard held round to the back straight. At the five furlongs Signal Officer made a fast move, and with three furlongs to run he was showing the way to Hansel, with Joygiver and Salmon Spear next, and gaps to Lord Dundonald and Brockie. Signal Officer worked clear of Hansel as soon as the run home commenced, but he was challenged by Salmon Spear at the distance and the latter finished strongly to wear Signal Officer down and win by half a length. Joygiver got up to beat Hansel by a length for third, with good margins to Lord Dundonald and Brockie. Brilliant Two-year-old Once he reached the front at the end of three-quarters of a furlong, Magical never gave ■ his supporters any cause for anxiety as to the result of the McLean Stakes, and he dispelled the belief that an outside position at the barrier is a bar to success. Starting from No. 13 in a field of 19, Magical jumped out well, gathered his speed quickly, and raced down to the winning post like a seasoned horse. Tridenf actually jumped out better than Magical, but the latter soon crossed over to take the lead. At the end of a furlong Magical had worked over to the rails and in the straight drew out to beat Trident by three lengths with two lengths to Shadamai, who beat St. Bruno by the same margin. Then came Robin Redbreast, Top Deck, Bay Gundi, Don’t Listen Card Money, and Musselman. Magical gave his trainer, F. D. Jones, his third success in the race, his previous winners being Control in 1933 and Prosperity in 1921. Owned by Mr A. Louisson, of Christchurch, Magical is a fine upstanding brown gelding by Balloch from the Absurd mare, Black Cat, and was purchased at the last yearling sales at Trentham for 2000 guineas. Deep Harmony finished on much better than usual when he won the Telegraph Handicap. He was always well placed, took charge at the furlong, and carried on to win unchallenged by two lengths. Outside fancies in Stagestruck and Sterling Lad filled the minor places, the former putting up a good performance as he was the last away. Lorna Leigh, Deep Harmony, and Sterling Lad began best, but Mysterious Melody quickly ran through to the front to set the pace from Deep Harmony, Sterling Lad, Cipher, Red Pickle, and Lorna Leigh. Once into the straight. Red Pickle momentarily headed Mysterious Melody, but Deep Harmony came through fast at the furlong and kept clear to the post. Two lengths away Stagestruck finished ■ well on the rails to beat Sterling Lad for second. Cipher was a head away in fourth place. Then came Mysterious Melody, Palm Bearer, Lorna Leigh, and Red Pickle. Loyal Lady scored her first success in open company when she finished brilliantly in the October Handicap to win going away from Air Ace, which looked to have the race in hand inside the final furlong. Botany was a fair third. The favourites, Zorro and Prize Ring, failed to run up to expectations. The former raced so badly that he will not start in the Dunedin Guineas next Saturday. Prize Ring lost his position soon after the start and failed to finish on as he did in the Geraldine Cup the previous week. TeMuka was the early leader from Air Lord. Air Ace, Botany, and Zorro, but turning for home Botany took charge and was followed by Te-Muka, Air Ace, and Zorro. Loyal Lady finished brilliantly from the middle of the'field to beat Air Ace by two lengths with four lengths to Botany, which held on for third. Eriskay was finishing on in fourth place just ahead of Prize Ring .and Zorro.

Unbeaten Over Hurdles Although he added to his handicap by being side on to the barrier and about two lengths in the rear when the field was dispatched, Wee Mac outclassed the field in the Spring HUrdles and maintained his unbeaten record over hurdles. Wee Mac started to make up ground after four furlongs, and was in fourth place with six furlongs to run. He took the lead entering the straight, and although he ran about a little going into the last hurdle, he •cleared it safely and went away to win very easily. The race was then for the minor placings. Ruling Moment held on to beat Sir Saladin by a length with Foreign Ways only half a head back. The last-named two made up a lot of ground over the last half mile.

Narrow But Decisive Win Starting from the outside of the field Pageantry soon worked into a handy position in the first division of the Trial Handicap, and he drew out in the run home to win narrowly, but decisively, by a neck from an outsider in Flibbertigibbet, with Beaugard a fair third. Fonso and Flibbertigibbet were the first to show out from Tohoo and Beaugard, but at the distance Fonso started to weaken, Pageantry moving up to challenge Flibbertigibbert. He soon had her measure. Beaugard was finishing on in third place three lengths back with a bigger margin to Fonso and Tohoo. Easily Seen, which was slow away, headed the rest.

Satisfactory Guineas Trial Coral Arc registered a satisfactory trial for the Dunedin Guineas when he won the second division of the Trial Stakes comfortably. He was never further back than third in the running. At the distance Some Sal was two lengths clear, but Coral Arc finished solidly and wore her down to win by three-quarters of a length. Carry On held on for third, another three lengths away, with two lengths to Sally Gazelle in fourth place. Then came Royal Anne and Glen Cona. Good Finishing Run Sir Raimond and Kartikeya registered first-class performances in the Kaikorai Handicap, both being badly placed near the rear of the field turning into the straight and finishing exceptionally well. Duvaals came through fast to take the lead commencing the last furlong, while further back Sir Raimond, Kartikeya, and Aganev were prominent. Duvaals looked a winner until Sir Raimond flashed up on the outside with half a furlong to run and drew out to win comfortably. Kartikeya, wide out, finished even faster than the winner and cut Duvaals out of third place. Aganev was fourth, and then came Vanity King, Punjab, Incitatus, Hart Royal, and the favourite. Bay Fort.
