SAVING OF PETROL
The hope that voluntary saving of petrol would be sufficient to avoid irksome rationing was expressed by Mr W. R. Carey (president) to the annual meeting of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) on Saturday evening. Motorists were asked to reduce running to about the equivalent of that in the latter part of rationing, he said. This did not seem an impossible goal. There w as a feeling in some quarter* that private motoring was a luxury; but members would agree that it waa now an accepted feature ©f home Ide. The average motorist did not go running about the country for nothing. However, since it appeared that the private motorist would be hit most severely under rationing, the executive appealed for conservation to avoid this issue and at the same time help Britain, and asked for an equal effort from other users.
