JUNIOR NATIONAL PARTY DEBATE
UNIVERSITY TEAM WINS 44 H ” CUP The "H” Cup for competition among debating teams of the Canterbury divisional junior organisation of the New Zealand National Party was won by the Canterbury University College team. In the final of the contest held on Saturday evening, the Canterbury College team beat Fendalton A by 302 points to 279. Mr N. Bowron. leader of the Canterbury College team, wm judged the best speaker. The subject for the debate was “Can New Zealand have a five-day. 40-hour week, and maintain present-day living standards' 1 Fendalton took the affirmative. The Fendalton team was Mr J. Anderson. Miss Eileen Galbraith, and Mr A. Hollander, and the Canterbury College team Messrs N. Bowron, B Petrie, and J. G. Leggatt. Mr S. G. Holland. Leader, of the Opposition. and Mr E. B. E. Taylor, chairman of the divisional executive of the National Party, were the judges. Mr D. Laver was chairman. Mr Holland, after the decision of the judges had been announced, gave a commentary on the performance of each of the speakers. He complimented the speakers on the high standard of debate. The cup was presented to the winning team by Mrs E. R Rice, the donor. Mr Hofland expressed the hope that the contests would be extended to include other divisions.
