BOYS’ TOURNAMENT CONCLUDED

AUCKLAND WINS SHIELD; CANTERBURY SECOND Winning all five matches played, Auckland won the championship of the New Zealand Rugby League schoolboys’ tournament, which was concluded at Athletic Park yesterday. • Canterbury was the runner-up, winning three games, drawing one, and losing one. Taranaki was third (two wins, a draw, and two losses), and South Auckland and West Coast were fourth (two wins and three losses each). West Coast beat Taranaki by 5 points to 2 in a game in which there was no score in the first half. West Coast produced some of the form expected of the team, and Grindle scored the only try after a -good run. Russell converted. Taranaki’s points came from a penalty kick by McKay. Griffin, the captain of the West Coast team, showed an excellent spirit by sacrificing many personal chances to shine to get the best out of his Side. Mr 'H. Marshall (South Auckland) was the referee. The match between Auckland and Wellington, which the former team won by 27 points to 8, was played in a very sportsmanlike mannei Campbell, one of the Wellington breakaways, played an excellent game. Carlson (3), Hayston (2), Mitchell, and Colquhoun scored tries for Auckland. Colquhoun (2) and Manderson converted tries. The referee was Mr E. J. Smith (Canterbury). The Canterbury-South Auckland match decided the runner-up in the competition. Canterbury won by 13 points to 3. After their strenuous games on previous days both teams were very tiried, and Canterbury’s victory was again the result of the work of • the forwards. Scoring two tries in the game, W. Lisle brought his total for the tournament to seven and proved himself to be one of the best forwards in the competition. B Smith (breakaway) add 'Thompson (wing threequarters) were the pick of the South Auckland boys. Bailey scored the other try for Canterbury, and Pahi converted two. For South Auckland B. A grand parade of the six teams competing in the tournament will be held after the match, and cups and trophies will be presented by the president of the Canterbury Rugby League (Mr L. G. Amos). Avery Full support for a scheme to raise funds to send a schoolboys team to Australia in 1948 was promised by the delegates. After discussion it was decided to endorse the constitution regarding weights and ages of boys playing Rugby League games in the Dominion. It was suggested that representative and former representative players could take a more active part in the coaching of schoolboy teams. The next tournament was fixed for May, 1948, at New Plymouth.
