CARS IN HAGLEY PARK
Sir, —The old romantic city of Richmond, Virginia, is spattered- with statues of Southern army heroes of the American Civil War. A-few years before this war, the city fathers, suffering from our fathers’ “What to do next” itch, decided to reline parts of the city, eliminating some of these Civil War statues. Not a word of protest appeared; demolition day arriving, the fathers took a walk downtown just in case a little extra advice was needed. ’There, ringing each statue, stood a grim band of men and women expectantly fingering loaded shotguns. The statues to-day still look down on their passing guardians. It would be quite a nice day’s work for us grandchildren of the First Four Ship pioneers to stroll in Hagley Park awaiting our city fathers’ ceremonial opening of the Hagley motor park.— Yours, etc., GUY HASKINS. August 29, 1947.
