THE BUDGET

Sir,—Mr Nash now admits what the Opposition contended in the debate on October 10, viz, the much less favourable treatment of State superannuitants compared with public servants. The latter, as well as having the family allowance withbut means test, which we are taxed for but never enjoy, receive pay that will ensure retiring allowances as much as or more than our allowances and cost of living bonus combined. Theirs and all others’ cost of living bonuses were without means test and are now incorporated in salaries and wages. Ours, apparently *is still subject to means test, even in many cases where the allowance is less than the age benefit and taxed the second time. The Government imposes no means test on the £l5OO a year officer who gets a £5OO rise in superannuation, and abolished Labour M.P.’s hated salary pool means test, giving them the £3OO nearly tax-free rise.—Yours, etc., SUPERANNUITANT NO. 2. August 29, 1947.
