TOWN HALL

Sir, —Most people agree that the best site for a town hall is that block surrounded by Kilmore, Colombo and Victoria streets and Cambridge terrace, Trams from eight districts have stopping places there, and many buses could.. All other trams have their terminals in the Square, which is not five minutes’ walk away. Mr Harman’s plan is for Madras street, which is too far from the centre and only served by one tram. Will the Mayor and councillors agree to have a vote taken at the next election as to whether the townspeople would be willing for this excellent site to be purchased before expensive alterations are made and the property held until material is more plentiful. It would be a splendid starts Perhaps the Municipal Electricity Department would lend the purchase money.— Yours, etc., * H. JOHNSTON. August 29, 1947. Sir, —There must be many who disagree with all the discussions aboutza town hall for Christchurch. With the world in a state of chaos there are many more important issues at stake. When one considers this small country, surely we have money enough sunk in bricks and mortar, plus marble floors, etc. In any case, town halls are not a self-supporting proposition. The wisest move Christchurch could make is to get on with Colombo street railway crossing. A golden opportunity is being missed by allowing any building Operations to proceed, say, south of the new City Hotel on either side of Colombo street. Such land could be new roads serving east and west to Moorhouse avenue, leaving ample room for the overhead bridge over Moorhouse avenue and the railway line. The corner would then be back to the New City Hotel on either side. —Yours, etc., WIDE AWAKE. August 29, 1947.
