ACCURACY OF SCALES
CHANGES IN REGULATIONS PROPOSED Proposals for changes in the regulations governing the accuracy of scales in commercial use have been drawn up by the department of Labour, and are now being circulated among scale manufacturers and dealers for thei? comments. It is proposed to bring the permissible tolerances to half the present margins. A greater uniformity in the standards enforced by inspectors of weights and measures is also aimed at. Since it is of importance to retailer, mercharft, ana consumer alike that scales should give accurate weights, a system of checking is carried out in New Zealand as in most other countries. Every repair job done by a scale repairing firm must also be tested and stamped before it leaves the works. The present regulatic..s were adopted in 1327. Some dealers say. in objection to changes to the regulations, that old machines could not possibly be made to conform to closer tolerances, and would have to be scrapped.
