N.Z. COUNCIL MEETING

** The Press ’’ Special Service NELSON, August 27. A request for the next basketball championships to be held at Dunedin to coincide with the Otago centennial celebrations was made by Otago delegates at the New Zealand Council meeting to-day. The council decided by 59 votes to 44 to adhere to the rcta which gives New Plymouth the tournament in 1948. However, it was agreed that when an Australian basketball team visits New Zealand next year the first test match should be played at Dunedin. Canterbury delegates expressed the opinion that the tournaments were becoming unwieldy. Basketball was growing in popularity and if the tournament became any bigger it could not be handled efficiently. The idea was to have two sections in a major association tournament and two sections in a separate minor association tournament, one to be held in the North Island and the other in the South Island. No action was taken.
