N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS CANTERBURY BEATS AUCKLAND “ The Press *’ Special Service NELSON, August 27. Canterbury beat Auckland, joint New Zealand basketball champion with Manawatu, last year, on the opening day of this year’s championship tournament. The Canterbury defence was excellent and the team had a noticeable superiority in the centres. The shooting on both sides was good. Manawatu gave a brilliant display to beat Otago. T. Trask and N. Rogers were outstanding. Results were:— A Grade.— Manawatu 17, Wanganui 16; Otago 24, Wellington 23; Southland 20, Hawke’s Bay 18; Canterbury 26, Auckland 21. B Grade.—South Canterbury 17, Roto-rua-Bay ,of Plenty 6; Waikato 21, Ashburton 16; Poverty Bay 21, Southland Minor 14; Tauranga 39, Hutt Valley 9; Horowhenua 25, Matamata 12. C Grade.—Temuka. 18, Kaikoura 12; Hokitika 18, Otago Minor 8; Nelson 30, Hawke’s Bay Minor 7.
