GENERAL MOTORS OUTPUT

DETROIT, August 8. Production of passenger cars and trucks by the General Motors Corporation of America- during July declined to 139,294 units from the June figure of 155,609 units —primarily because of extensive shutdowns by car manufacturing and assembly divisions in the latter part of the month, resulting from a serious shortage of flat-rolled steel. Over the first seven months of 1947, the corporation produced in the United States and Canada 1,061,000 units, compared with 382,000 and 1,726,000 units respectively in the corresponding weeks of 1946 and 1941. Mr R. H. Laytoh. of the National Insurance Company of New Zealand, who has been manager of the New Plymouth branch for the last 12 years, has been appointed manager of the Queensland branch with headquarters at Brisbane.
