SCHOOLS OF ART

RELATIONSHIP TO UNIVERSITY

RECOMMENDATIONS OF COLLEGE COUNCIL

Recommendations to the Minister of Education (Mr H. G. R. Mason) on the relationship of schools of art to the University of New Zealand were passed by the Canterbury University College Council yesterday afternoon. They provide for such schools to be placed under the complete control of their respective University colleges with status as special schools. The proposals of the college committee adopted were:— Both the Elam (Auckland) and Canterbury Schools of Art should pass under the complete control of their respective University colleges with local advisory boards. Application should be made to the Senate to recognise each as a special school. The Senate should be asked to retain the Diploma of Fine Arts.

“Teaching practice” and “Education” should be eliminated from the course, these to be provided by the Education Department in a post-diploma course. The diploma course should be of not less than three years after preliminary instruction. The methods of examination should be as approved by the Senate after consideration of recommendations made by the Academic Board.

.‘art-time students and full-time nondiploma students should be admitted to the schools.

The qualifications of entry to the schools should be: —(a) for diploma students the passing of the preliminary examination; (b) for other students either three years’ secondary education or attain the. age of 17 years and be accepted by the director as suitable. with a right of appeal in case of non-acceptance to the advisory committee.

The Education Department should not press, in the meantime, for the recognition of any other schools of fine arts.

The director of each school should ?ave the status and salary of lecurer head of department, consideration to be given later to appointment if directors as professors. The heads if each of the three sub-departments >f each school (painting, sculpture, ind design) should have the status and :alury of a senior lecturer. As far as Canterbury is concerned, tpproval to the above should be sub-

ect to its not losing “department” >uilding priority. A new fine arts milding had been promised for sev‘ral years and it was understood that is a "special school” it would not beome involved in the University buildng programme.
