STORAGE OF PETROL
WARNING GIVEN TO MOTORISTS
A warning that motorists who stored more than 8£ gallons of petrol without a licence were committing a breach of the city and rendered themselves liable to prosecution and the confiscation of the petrol, was given by the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast) yesterday. Mr Feast said he understood that some motorists were setting by stores of kerosene for fuel, but this could not be stored in greater quantities than 50 gallons, and was subject to the same safety provisions. Mr Feast said that the city by-laws concerning dangerous goods covered the storage of petrol. It could not be stored in greater quantities than 8$ gallons except under a licence approved by the City Council, and then only in an approved place. Petrol could not be stored in a house or an attached outhousee, and adequate precautions must be taken to prevent accidents by fire or explosion and to prevent seepage into any sewer or drain.
Mr Feast said that kerosene, power kerosene, methylated spirits, turpentine, and spirits of wine could not be stored in greater quantities than 50 gallons, and were subject to the same storage precautions.
Mr Feast added that the council’s inspectors had authority to seize any motor spirits stored otherwise than in tccordance with the by-laws.
