IONOSPHERE SECTION
REPORTED TRANSFER TO WELLINGTON IMMEDIATE ACTION NOT CONTEMPLATED An immediate transfer of the ionosphere section of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research to Wellington is not contemplated. This reply has been given by the Minister in charge of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (Mr A. H. Nordmeyer) to the expansion and development committee of the Christchurch City Council. The committee had protested against the reported decision to establish the section, previously allocated To Christchurch, in - Wellington.
“The actual recording station operated at Lincoln College with Canterbury University College will remain as at present,” says Mr Nordmeyer in his letter, which was received by the City Council’s public relations officer (Mr T. H. Langford) yesterday. “Consideration has been given, however, to transfer at some time in the future of certain routine recording work which*is not regarded as having so much significance in the work of the students at the physics department of Canterbury University College. “I understand it is considered by both the Post and Telegraph Department and the National Broadcasting Service that this section of the work might be better carried out close to their head offices. Nevertheless, as stated, no immediate transfer is contemplated, though I understand that in the official advertisements for transferring the staff from the temporary to the permanent staff of the Public Service mention is made of the possibility in the future of such a transfer. “I have instructed my department not to proceed with the transfer of even a part of the work without allowing the whole case to be brought before me at the time, when I shall be pleased to give every consideration to your reports.”
