LIGHT PLANES FOR R.N.Z.A.F.
PURCHASE OF SIX AUSTERS FORESTRY PATROLS AND ARMY LIAISON Six Auster light aircraft for forestry patrols and Army liaison work are to be bought by the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Provision for the purchase of the aircraft has been made in the Air Department’s' estimates for this year, and an initial order has been placed. The Chief of Air Staff (Air ViceMarshal A. de T. Nevill) said yesterday that the Austers would be used for the type of work performed by air observation post squadrons as well as for forestry patrols. The Royal New Zealand Air Force already had forestry patrols in the North Island, using Tiger Moths and Harvards.
The Auster is a two-seater highwing monoplane which during the war was described as “the eyes of the Army.” Because of its extreme manoeuvrability it could take off and land in very short distances, and was used extensively in Italy and Europe for artillery spotting and ambulance -work in areas. AirWice-Marshal Nevill mentioned that the training of artillery officers of the New Zealand Army as pilots for liaison work was now under consideration.
