NATIONAL GOLF EVENT
CHRISTCHURCH ENTRIES The New Zealand women’s golf championship tournament will open this year at Hamilton on October 2 and continue until October 9. The tournament was revived last season after a lapse of eight years, because of the war, and was played at the Shirley ranks, Christchurch. It was well supported by both North and South Island players, including Miss Jean Horwell, who won the championship, and Mrs G. W. Hollis (Oliver Kay J who has held the title three times, her last success being in 1937 in Napier. TMte winner in 1938, when the tournament was held at New Plymouth, was Miss Suzanne Collins (now Mrs J. P. Hornabrook). who did not defend iier title last year. Since the championship was inaugurated in 1893 when the first tournament was played, in Dunedin, North Island players have been successful L 4 times and South Island players 18 times. Christchurch players who will take par-' in the tournament at Hamilton in Octobe; will be Miss Melva Wake, honorary secretary of the Christchurch Ladies’ Club, who will be making her first appearance as a player in the Dominion tournament, Mrs W. Toomey, Miss Eileen Nutt, Miss Zoe Hudson, Miss Helen Buchanan, and Miss Kathleen Rutherford. Mrs Toomey and Miss Nutt intend to play at the Wanganui tournament before going to Hamilton, and at tournaments at Palmerston North and Heretaunga on their way south. Miss Hudson, Miss Buchanan, and Miss Rutherford plan to play in the Auckland provincial tournament at Titirangi before going to Hamilton, and Miss Hudson and Miss Claire Smith, of Invercargill, who are holders of the New Zealand loursomes championship, will later play in the Rotorua and Heretaunga tournaments. They intend to leave Christchurch on September 18. M’ss Buchanan and Miss Rutherford wil’. also probably play in the Wanganui provincial tournament at Heretaunga before returning.
