IMPERIAL STAR NEW BLUE STAR LINER LAUNCHED Advice has been received in Australia that the new Blue Star liner Imperial Star was launched from the yards of Harland and Wolff, Govan, on June 18, says the “Daily Commercial News and Shipping List” (Sydney). The Imperial Star replaces her namesake, which was lost on a Malta convoy during the war, and is the fourth Blue Star liner launched since the war. There are, in addition, five more vessels already on the stocks, aggregating more than 98,000 gross register tons. The Imperial Star is a twin-screw vessel of 13,250 gross tons. 572 feet long, with a 70ft beam and a depth of slightly more than 43 feet. She is powered with Harlands (B. and W.) Diesel oil eightcylinder engines, developing a total of 16,000 8.H.P., giving a sea speed of 17 knots. In addition to being equipped with a cruiser stern, one of the features of the construction of the Imperial Star is the swan bow. She will carry all classes of refrigerated produce as well as wool and general cargo, and is equipped with the most up-to-date cargo-handling gear. The vessel is fitted to carry a limited number of passengers. VESSELS IN WIRELESS RANGE The following vessels are within wireless range of the undermentioned New Zealand stations:— Auckland.—Matua.
