PREFERENCE TO MEN SUGGESTED
TEACHING POSITIONS WITH LIVING QUARTERS
“I am not deprecating the value of women teachers, but there are cases where a man should be in charge of a school,” said the acting-chairman (Mr A. E. Lawrence) at a meeting of the Canterbury Education Board yesterday. ’ « The appointments committee recommended that the Education Department be asked to give preference to men over women in appointments as sole charge teachers or head teachers where there were living quarters. This question had been discussed very fully by the department, it was stated, and the department had replied that the position was appreciated, but that it felt nothing should be done to weaken the existing system, which provided that the highest graded applicant, male or female, must be appointed. Women applicants had been appointed to three or four schools with residences in the Timaru area, said Mr Lawrence.
