AIR SPEED RECORD

640.7 MILES AN HOUR BY U.S. PLANE (Rec. 12.20 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 20. The United States Navy announced that its new jet-propelled D 558 experimental aeroplane, the “Skystreak,” to-day established a new world atr speed record of 640.7 miles an hour. The aircraft flew over a measured course in California four times. ‘lts fastest speed was 653.4 miles an hour. The pilot (Commander Turner Caldwell) said that he encountered no compressibility. The aircraft carried 5001 b of recording instruments for research purposes.
