LEVY FOR LABOUR NEWSPAPER
MOTION REJECTED BY UNION STOREMEN’S SPECIAL MEETING A motion to levy members 5s each for the purpose of taking up shares in New Zealand Labour Newspapers, Ltd., was defeated at a special general meeting of the Canterbury Storemen’s Packers’, and Warehousemen’s Union. No further action in the matter of a levy for this purpose is contemplated, the secretary (Mr J. L. Laby) said yesterday. A notice containing the full text of the motion, of which notice had been given, and the executive’s recommendation, had been forwarded to every member about 17 days before the meeting, said Mr Laby. The discussion was very full and interesting. A democratic way had been taken by the executive to allow members to express their opinions on the proposal, after letters from the newspaper company, he said. Instead of bringing the appeal for subscriptions for shares before the quarterly general meeting,
the executive had taken the course of having notice given by a member and calling a special general meeting. Nothing could have beep more democratic. The union executive had left the issue to members, and the motion in no way indicated that members were to be forced to pay a levy unless they voted in favour of the levy. The notice of motion threw the matter open for discussion by all members.
