WAIRARAPA BEATEN
GOOD PLAY BY POVERTY BAY
(P.A.) MASTERTON, August 3. Fast-breaking forwards who bustled the Wairarapa backs into error, and a grand set of backs won the day for ’Poverty Bay when they beat Wairarapa I'l-6 in the senior representative Rugby football match before a crowd of about 2500 at Masterton yesterday. Wairarapa had a slight territorial advantage in the first spell, and had a lot of the ball, but without the services of B. Couch, who was absent because of family bereavement, the Wairarapa backs lacked finish. Poverty Bay backs handled the ball better. Wairarapa forwards hooked well, but were shaded by the visiting pack, and Mahupuka kicked a penalty for Wairarapa after a scrum infringement just inside tne halfway line.
Poverty Bay opened brilliantly in the second half, and the speedy centre, McKinley, made a grand run for Edwards to score. Clay converted. Shortly afterwards, a Poverty Bay forward cut in from a melee near the Wairarapa posts and scored a try Clay’s kick missed. Barbour and Edwards were associated in an enterprising move, and the latter scored for Pove o Bay, after beating three Wairarapa men. For Wairarapa, J. Walker kicked a penalty from a difficult angle.
