SOUTH CANTERBURY RETAINS HANAN SHIELD
Combining well for its first representative match this season, the South Canterbury Rugby team retained the Hanan Shield in a hard-fought match against North Otago at Fraser Park. Timaru, on Saturday by 8 points to 3 Although the score was 3-0 against it at the end of the first spell, the South Canterbury team improved considerably in the second half and held the upper hand in the closing stages of the game. The brightest movement of the day'was seen in the second half, when M. Goddard raced through the opposition to score behind the posts for South Canterbury. A. Moore made the opening at about the half-way mark, passing to R. Comer, who passed on to Goddard. North Otago attacked from the outset, Collins nearly scoring. Getting more of the ball. South Canterbury used its backs, but Golder, Moseley, and Buzan carried the play to South Canterbury’s line, where Halversen kicked a goal from a penalty. Attacking early in the second half. North Otago met with solid defence. The score by Goddard behind the posts was converted by Prattley. who goaled again before time was called the second time from a penalty, making the final score: South Canterbury 8 (goal from a try and a penalty goal), North Otago 3 (penalty goal).
The referee was Mr C Wellman (Ashburton).
