NATIONAL ROMNEY STUD
PROPOSAL IN WILL OF OTAGO FARMER (P.A.) DUNEDIN. July 29. What may become a national stud farm for purebred Romney Marsh sheep and Hereford cattle has been bequeathed to the Government of New Zealand, or to some suitable incorporated society or body of persons in New Zealand, by the late Mr William Telford, a sheep farmer, of Otanomomo, South Otago. Some land in the Clutha survey district is also to be used as a scenic or public reserve, according to the will. A portion of the estate to the extent of about 1250 acres is to be set aside as a stud farm to encourage the breeding of purebred Romney sheep and Hereford cattle. A flock of sheep and a herd of cattle at present on the property are to be used as foundation stock, and only those sheep now on the property and those obtained from recognised Romney studs in Kent. England, are to be used in the breeding operations.
The net annual income from the ultimate residue of the estate after other trusts of the will have been satisfied, as far as possible is to be applied to both or either of the following purposes: (1) To encourage and promote the improvement of sheep breeding in New Zealand.
(2) To promote and assist research work into the causes and cure of diseases and ailments of the human body.
