RUGBY FOOTBALL

STANDARD OF PLAY

COLTS’ TEAM TO BE SELECTED To improve the standard of Rugby in Canterbury the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union, at a meeting last evening decided that a colts’ team should be selected to play three or four games this season. Reporting for -the coaching committee, Mr C. H. McPhail said .that such a team would give the selectors a guide for the future. It was proposed that a team comprising 25 players be selected to play against various colts’ teams in the sub-unions under the Canterbury Union’s jurisdiction. .... The coaching committee proposed that when the players had been selected they should be given to one man to manage coach, and train, he said. An age limit of 22 was selected, with perhaps an exception for the captain, who, it was felt, should be a man of some experience. Mr W. E. Maxwell: It is a very good idea. It would be a royal opportunity to find any talent that might exist in the country. Another membe'r of the coaching committee, and one of the provincial selectors (Mr O. J. Hattersley) said it was proposed .that the team be selected before the end of the senior competition, and then to take the players in hand and coach them properly before they played a match together. Players who were not among the 15 taking part in a game would be taken along and would have pointed out to them any mistakes the actual players made. It was desired, if possible, to meet teams of equal strength so as to give the players confidence. After a short discussion it was agreed that the age limit for the team be 22, that nominations close on August 12, and that the coaching committee select the players and then appoint a manager to be in sole charge.. - ' Test for Touch Judges Touch judges should be put through a test as were referees, said Mr A. K. Johnson. Many did not know when to use their flags. The matter had been a bone of contention for some years, said Mr R. W. Blazey. He thought that the matter should be passed on to the Referees’ Association for consideration. On the motion of Mr M. Gunderson, it was decided to place Mr Johnson’s suggestion before the Referees’ Association. An application by a commercial firm for the use of a set of jerseys was declined. The New Zealand Rugby Union recommended that the Canterbury Union pay compensation to - the - Canterbury All Blacks. W. G. Argus and F. G. Hobbs, who were injured during the recent tour of Australia, and then make application to the parent union for repayment. An application by D. A. Yandle for reinstatement to the code from Rugby League was recommended to the New Zealand Union. The president advised that the union s share of the profits from the South Island All Black trial match in May amounted to £97 Bs, and for the two University matches £133. The two figures, added together, he said, was about the total received from an ordinary club game. Further representations will be made to the Post and Telegraph Department for the installation of a telephone at Rugby Park. Last Saturday, said Mr H. C. Blazey, a player had been badly injured, and because of the lack of a telephone to summon an ambulance, he had suffered unnecessarily. That case was the complete answer to any criticism about the Rugby Union being granted a telephone. . , On behalf of the Referees’ Association, Mr H. T. Coulter reported that players with metal sprigs on their boots would not be allowed to play. Referees had been instructed to make an examination and to enforce the rule closely. That policy had been laid down some years ago, said the president, and the union had not departed from it. W. G. Argus (Linwood) was appointed captain and M. Henderson (North Canterbury) was appointed vice-captain of the team which will tour Nelson and Wellington next week. Advice was received from the selectors that W. McHugh (Linwood) was unavailable and that big place would be taken by D. Jones (Christchurch). DRAW FOR SATURDAY (Unless otherwise stated, all games will commence at 2.45 p.m.) Senior.—Chch v.
