FAREWELL TO DRUM MAJOR
CITY OF CHRISTCHURCH HIGHLAND PIPE BAND
A record attendance of band members, supporters, and representatives of other bands an<j societies, gathered in the City of Christchurch Highland Pipe Band rooms to say farewell to Mr S. Newton, who has been drum-major to the band for 22 years. Mr T. M. Charters, president of the band, made presentations to Mr Newton of a cheque and a miniature drummajor’s staff. The success achieved by the band through the years could, in a large measure, be attributed to his interest and thorough knowledge of his work. Mr Charters said. Mrs Newton also received a presentation from members of the band. Replying. Mr Newton paid a tribute to Pipe-Major J. A. Patterson, who nad ueen associated with him from the rime the band was formed.
Pipe-Major Pattersop was also presented with a cheque from members, in appreciation of his services to the band since its inception.
