POWER SAVING IN RICCARTON
UNIQUE POSITION CLAIMED
The Riccarton Borough Council was believed to hold a unique position among South Island power supply authorities in that it was the only one to keep within its quota during the whole period of the electricity restrict! c ns, said Cr. E. J. Bradshaw, chairman of the electricity committee, to the council last evening. This month the weekly savings had been: 21.3 per cent., 24.2 per cent., 21.2 per cent, and 10.06 per cent, last week when the cut was reduced to 10 per cent.
Restrictions had been relaxed chiefly by giving longer hours for domestic water heating, he said; but it was necessary to reimpose .a longer cut at the end of last week to keep within the quota. It appeared that shopkeepers were becoming a little careless of the need for continual vigilance. as unwarranted window lighting had been used. He appealed to shopkeepers to use only essential lighting. as the council preferred to give any concessions to the whole community for domestic purposes. A large processing plant had given material help by generating extra power. If exectricity was not conserved, it meant using up limited stocks of coal.
