More than half a million tons of coal have been railed this year from the West Coast to other South Island markets, mainly Canterbury In the first quarter of this year 214,667 tons were consigned, and in the second quarter 238.923 tons, a total for the six months of 435.590 tons. Heavier coal consignments to the east coast have been made this month, slightly more than 59,000 tons going forward in three weeks. This brought the total amount railed to Canterbury so far this year to 512,596 tons.
