AUSTRALIAN JOCKEYS’ PREMIERSHIP

W. COOK CREATES RECORD (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 27. W. Cook has created a record by being the first New South Wales jockey to win the State premiership six times. In fees from his 42 winners this season, Cook earned £1683. In the last eight seasons he has been premier jockey four times and second four times, and has ridden 470 winners and 12 dead-heats. He was one ahead of the runner-up, J. Thompson, last week, but clinched victory by a win at Rosehill yesterday, while Thompson rode a dead heat in another race. With 16$ wins, T. Mullane won the apprentices’ premiership. The Victorian’ jockeys’ title went to J. Purtell, who defeated H. Badger, who has been five times premier jockey. Badger is going to England to try his riding skill there. E. Bartie, one of Sydney’s most consistent jockeys in the last 20 years, has announced his permanent retirement from the saddle. In his long career he has ridden more than 1000 winners.

AMERICAN RECORD EQUALLED

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, July 26. Cover Up won the 100,000 dollar Hollywood Gold Cup at Inglewood, California, to-day, equalling the 34-year-old American record for a mile and a quarter—2min 0 4-ssec. Burning Dream was second and. Honeymoon, the favourite, third.

Accident Fees Due Accident fees for the 1947-48 season are due for payment on August 1. The sebretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club appeals to all owners and trainers with horses engaged at the Grand National meeting to pay their fees prior to the first day of the meeting, as the collection of the fees at the scales on race days causes considerable delay in the weighing out of riders. —Advt.
