MASON RIVER BRIDGE

, Sir,—lt was with great amazement that we of the inland route to Kaikoura came upon the billiard-table smoothness of the fiiain highway to Hanmer, when sallying forth to catch a glimpse of Field-Marshal Montgomery on his way to the West Coast. The amazement being, that in one county two such different highways exist; one perfect, the other decidedly imperfect. It was a very good thing for the Field-Marshal that his itinerary did not enforce him to travel on the main highway between Waiau and Kaikoura. a great deal more than his right-hand would have been aching before he reached his destination if it had. Whether the Main Highways Board would have risen to the occasion and provided a bridge over the Mason for him is open to speculation; It evidently does not think anyone else is worth considering.—Yours, etc,, FED-UP.
