BUILDERS’ REPLY TO CRITICISM
DESIRE FOR RELAXATION OF SPECIFICATIONS
All builders asked was that the Government should make the specifications for houses built under the system of rehabilitation loans the same as those for State houses, said Mr J. R. Smith, president of the Canterbury Master Builaers’ Association, yesterday. Executive members of the association met yesterday morning, and considered that Mr H. E. Batchelor, vicepresident of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association, “had created an erroneous impression.” Mr Batchelor, at a meeting of the executive of his association this week, protested against the actions of some builders in seeking work for which rehabilitation loans would not be accepted. “I still maintain that if the Government made available sections for returned men, so that they would have an opportunity of getting quotations from reputable builders, there would be no repetition of the advertisements.” Mr Smith added, referring to advertisements which appeared in “The Press’" offering the building of houses, and specifying that work under rehabilitation loans would not be accepted*
