ATTACKS ON WOMEN

RECENT CASES IN PAPANUI Three attacks on women at night by what is believed to have been the same man. have been reported recently in the Papanui district. A similar weapon—described by one of the women as resembling a sock filled with very heavy material and swinging on a strap—was used in each case. The first attack was made about three weeks ago on a woman walking home from the Papanui tram terminus along the North road. Discovering that she was being followed, she ran for the house of some friends. She was struck over the head as she jumped ever the gate. Reaching the house in a dazed condition she was taken in by friends, by which time the man had escaped. The second attack was made on a woman cyclist in Vagues road, when she was returning home from a dance. The man forced her to dismount and struck her. She broke away and escaped. Last Sunday an elderly woman was attacked in Langdons road, just before she reached her home. She had noticed the man following her for some distance, and when she turned and spoke to him he struck her three times. Escaping from her attacker, she went up the path of the nearest house, occupied by neighbours, and was found on the porch, suffering from severe shock and bruises.
