THE WATERSIDERS

Sir,—lt was pleasing to read letters by “Common Sense,” “Action Demanded” and “Reader” on the watersiders and pillaging. These indicate that at last a few are becoming articulate in their concern. Your leading article to-day is also timely. The article referred to is startling so far as the attitude of the Waterside Workers’ Union to pillaging is concerned. It appears that after a member is convicted he is then regarded as having contravened a resolution of the union. The executive then consider the case. Ye Gods! The union is not apparently concerned about the contravention of the laws of the State. Its attitude in striking for one day against the action of the police certainly condones offenders and guarantees that every effort will be taken to see they are not caught and convicted so that the rules of the union remain unpolluted.—Yours, etc., FED UP. Greymouth, July 21, 1947.
