FAMILY BENEFIT

Sir,—Rather than an all-round increase in wages, I would suggest that the fairest and most helpful increase would be to raise the child benefit to £1 a week. This would tend to raise our birth-rate and would give the extra help to the family man. The single man has sufficient for his needs at the present rate of pay. Youths have enough, as very few of them save. Childless couples can manage nicely on their present wage, as often both earn. When I see the cost of children’s clothing, and the scarcity, I am thankful my family is grown up.—— Yours, etc., T 1 on GRANDMA. July 22, 1947.
