TOBACCO

Sir.—As the tobacco shortage is becoming a matter of such importance, it is about time that we had the whole vexed question settled once and for all; so I offer a suggestion to the Government. Bring in an act making it a crime to smoke before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m.; from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and all day on Sundays. Make the penalty a severe one, with no magisterial power of mitigation, and empower the police to enter people’s homes in quest of smokers. The people will stand for it all right; they’ll stand for anything. If they eventually get a little restive, all the Government needs to, do is to set up an expensive commission. paid for out of the public purse, to travel the country taking evidence and suggestions; and after the report comes in. put it to one side and forget about it.—Yours, etc., GEO. E. ENGLISH. Runanga, May 5, 1947.
