TARANAKI LASHED BY GALE

(P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 15. A gale which raged over Taranaki early this morning from the south-east uprooted trees, brought down power lines, flattened fences and sheds, blew out windows, and did general damage to gardens. It was accompanied by driving rain. Top speed of the gale was 81 miles an hour at 4.20 a.m. Temperatures slid from 62 degrees at 6 p.m. yesterday to 50 degrees at 9.30 a.m. to-dsy. On Mount Egmont the gale drove in a combination of rain and sleet. Telephone communication was lost but later restored.

Palmerston North was lashed last night by a gale which reached a top velocity of 69 miles an hour and an average of 54 miles an hour for four hours.

Widespread damage was done to property, trees were uprooted, roofs blown off, power lines broken down, and several areas this morning were still without power and commuhicatiun.

Air Services to-day were not affected. Heavy rain accompanied the gale, a fall of one inch being recorded. At Mangahao, 1.59 in fell at No. 1 dam and 80 points at the power house. The level of the lake before the rain was 1309 feet, and afterwards 1345 feet.
