SENIOR WOMEN’S GRADE COMPETITION WON BY NORTH LINWOOD By its win against Elmwood, at Wilding Park, on Saturday, North Linwood retained the title in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s senior women’s competition. North Linwood, which won the competition last year with the same team, went through this season without a defeat. The final matches were closely contested, and some excellent tennis was played. Mrs M. Lawrence (Miss Margaret Burrell) beat Mrs H. Lane, second on the Canterbury ranking list, in an exciting match. Mrs Lawrence’s driving was specially good in the second set. The competition closed with the teams m the following positions:— North Linwood 5, Elmwood 3, United 3, Canterbury College I 2, Sumner 2, Canterbury College II 0. Results:— SENIOR WOMEN’S GRADE Elmwood v. North Linwood Singles.—Mrs M. Lawrence beat Mrs H. Lane, 6-4, 6-1; Mrs M. Jeffreys lost to Mrs J. Corich, 3-6, 3-6; Mrs A. Cheyne beat Miss S. Elsom, 6-4, 6-3; Miss J. Burt lost to Miss A. Hughes 7-9, 4-6. Doubles.—Mesdames Lawrence and Jeffreys lost to Mesdames Lane and Corich, 1-6, 2-6; Mrs Cheyne and Miss Burt lost to Misses Elsom and Hughes, 5- 2-6. North Linwood won by 4 matches to 2. Canterbury College I v. United Singles.—Miss I. Kitson beat Miss P. Webb, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3; Miss P. Kitson lost to Miss V. Rollitt, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6; Miss A. Thomas lost to Miss S. Hutchison, 6-2, 3-6, 2-6; Miss L. Robertson beat Miss A. Cuddon, 6-1, 6-3. Doubles—Misses I. and P. Kitson beat Misses Webb and Rollitt, 8-6, 6-2; Misses Thomas and Robertson lost to Misses Hutchison and Cuddon, 3-6, 3-6. Canterbury College I won by 8 sets to 7. Sunuier v. Canterbury College II Singles.—Miss P. Stevens lost to Miss J. Mac Gibbon, 3-6, 3-6; Mrs R. Beveridge beat Miss A. Pepper, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5; Mrs A.Kite beat Mrs M. Millard, 6-1, 6-4; Mrs H. S Chetwin beat Miss N. Vile, 6-0, 6Doubles.—Miss Stevens and Mrs Beveridge lost to Misses Mac Gibbon and Peppier, 2-6, 6-3, 0-6; Mesdames Kite and Chetwin beat Mrs Millard and Miss Vile, 6-1, 6-3. Sumner won by 4 matches to 2. SECOND MIXED GRADE Section I This section was wrin by St. Albans. Results on Saturday were:— St Albans beat Barrington by 102 games to 84 (unfinished November 2); Elmwood beat Waimairi by 9 sets to 7; Barrington beat Spreydon by 12 sets to 4; St. Albans beat Beckenham by 14 sets to 2; Cathedral beat Shirley by default. Section II This section was won by Edgeware. Results : Edgeware beat Redcliffs by 10 sets to 1 (unfinished November 2); Edgeware beat Barrington by 10 sets to 6; Redcliffs beat Wigram by 15 sets to 1; St. Paul’s beat Avonside by default; Shirley a bye. Third Mixed Grade Woolston beat Avonside Church in a close match to win this grade competition. Avonside was runner-up. Results were:— Woolston beat Avonside Church by 9 sets to, 7; Phillipstown beat Edgeware by 12 sets to 4; Windermere beat Mount Pleasant by 9 sets to 7; Cathedral a bye.
