YEARLING SALES AT TRENTHAM

3000 GUINEAS PAID FOR FILLY VALUES WELL MAINTAINED ON THIRD DAY From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON, Jan. 23. Although competition was not quite so keen as on the previous two days, values were well maintained on the third day of the national sale of thoroughbred yearlings at Trentham to-day. The majority of the lots that came forward were on account of individual vendors. Of the more prominent studs, the only one represented to-day was the Mardella Stud, Otahuhu, where the Imported horse Probation, stands. The stud offered seven lots which sold for a total of 5110 guineas. The top-priced lot of the draft was a colt by Probation from Ta Vie, a half-sister by Night Raid to Clarice, for which the Riccarton trainer, C. C. McCarthy, paid 1400 guineas.

The top price of the day was obtained for a bay filly by Coronach from the Great Northern Derby winner, Indian Princess, which was knocked down to Mr F. V. Lysons, as agent for the Maharajah of Kashmir, for 3000 guineas. This was also the highest price obtained for a filly during the present sale. The next best price was 2500 guineas obtained for a colt by Foxbridge from Whirlmint, the dam of British Mint. The purchaser was Mr L. C. Harzmeyer, of Melbourne. ;

There were a number of withdrawals during the day, and passings were more frequent than on the earlier days, in most cases the vendors having rather excessive values on their offerings. The total for the 66 lots sold was 36,938 guineas, an average of more than 559 guineas. The aggregate for the three days is 159,275 guineas, and the average price is 637 guineas. The final day of the sales will be held to-morrow, when a smaller offering will come forward. ■<
