WELLINGTON CLUB

RACING

PROSPECTS FOR TOMORROW

THORNBRIDGE FAVOURED FOR MAIN RACE From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON, January 23. The final day of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting will be held at Trentham on Saturday, and the highlight of the programme should be the weight-for-age race, the Trentham Stakes, in which Golden Souvenir, Soneri, and Beau le Havre will meet. » Bruce is a possible runner. The track remains hard and fast', and the race should be a memorable one.

Beau le Havre appears to be a three-year-old likely to extend the best of the older horses. The best has yet to be seen or this brilliant young colt, but he will have to be all that he is thought to be to beat Golden Souvenir at weight for age. He appears to have the brilliance to match Soneri, while in a small field Golden Souvenir will have an opportunity to test his stamina. Soneri has not raced since she was equal with Golden Souvenir in the Canterbury Cup, and will be at a disadvantage because her two strongest opponents are in hard racing condition. In a solidly run race, Golden Souvenir would be hard to head off. He is how at of his form, as his meritorious performance in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap yesterday showed, and with a drop in the weights he has been carrying recently he will be harder than ever to beat. At weight for age Bruce is likely to find Golden Souvenir a difficult proposition, but Bruce is likely to be in the picture if he takes his place in the field. The Summer Handicap has diawn a field of 22 runners, of which Bruce and Grill are engaged in other races. Bruce is the top-weight with 9-13, a big burdeft for a horse of his size, and game though he is such a weight may stop him. Foxwyn raced disappointingly in the Wellington Cup, but may make a better showing over this distance. Signal Officer made a splendid effort in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap coming from further back than Golden Souvenir. In a bigger field and with 41b more to carry, he may not be so fortunate in the running if he is so far back. Kerry Lad raced badly yesterday and soon tailed off. The reverse way of going may not have suited him, but he may improve. Langue d’Or ran a useful race yesterday, without looking likely, but he did not display much dash at the finish. Swift Quarry w r as prominent into the straight in the Wellington Cup, as was Thorhbridge, which was the actual leader at the start of the final furlong. With only 7-9 on his back Thornbridge appeals as a likely candidate for the major honours. Merry Robin should also be prominent. He put up an excellent performance yesterday, and is improving with each rape. Broiefield made a; surprisingly good showing in the Wellington Cup, but is a horse not likely to show any improvement. Indian Gold is useful, while the veteran Lowry Bay appears almost as good as ever. Among the light-weights, the best prospect may be Sakuntala, which is bound to be improved by her race in the Gloaming “Stakes. She has furnished into a good type of three-year-old, and staying is her strong point. A good field of sprinters will contest the City Handicap, the top-weight being the Telegraph .Handicap winner, Da Vinci, wdth 10-2, which is an increase of 71b on his weight last week. He will need to be. something exceptional to master that weight. Master Dash has 41b less, and although he is a splendid performer under weight, he may find the lighter weighted horses, Derene and Theocritus, difficult propositions. He won the race last year with 9-10, and will still have to be respected. Peter Robinson was well up all the Way in the Telegraph Handicap, but faded in the last 100 yards. He is brilliant but not always reliable. Derene raced well below her best in the Telegraph Handicap. Possibly the long delay at the start upset her, and her rider had to use her up a little to get a position near the rails. With that race she may come back to her best. Theocritus showed his worth in running Da Vinci to a nose in the Telegraph Handicap, whilp Peter .Gazelle, a much-improved sprinter, was only a head further back. Both Theocritus and Pe.ter Gazelle may be prominent again Specialist has some useful form to his credit, but Robin’s Reward and General Menteith are probably just below the best class.
