SANDERS CUP CONTEST CANTERBURY AND AUCKLAND WIN RACES (P.A.) AUCKLAND. January 22. Superior helmsmanship enabled Canterbury to win the second Sanders Cup race in a flukey breeze over a triangular course this morning. Canterbury led most of the race, but Auckland took the lead to the last mark, and the two had an interesting beat to the finishing line. Auckland put Canterbury about once, but a second attempt failed when Canterbury sailed round the stern to a windward position to cross the line 3min 19sec ahead of Auckland. Otago, the most consistent boat in the contest, was 33sec further back, while the others were spread out astern. The third race, sailed in a fresh breeze over a windward and leeward course, thrilled the spectators when Canterbury led Otago, and Otago passed her rounding the second mark. However, Auckland slipped around the buoy to take the lead on the beat to the last mark, and ran home 39sec ahead of Otago, which was 30sec ahead of Canterbury.
