CHEMICAL FACTORY STRIKE

THREAT TO HEALTH IN N.S.W.

(Rec. 10.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 22. The continued strike of employees of the Botany plant of Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., which has been closed down since October 23, is a seri6us threat to the health of the community and to industry generally, according to a spokesman of the Chamber of Manufacturers to-day. Chlorine and its compounds are manufactured in the factory and are used extensively in water purification. Many country water supply systems face contamination unless adequate supplies of chlorine become, available. Other results of the strike have been loss of caustic soda production with consequent effect on the soap shortage, the cessation of the manufacture of zinc chloride affecting battery and radio production, and shortages of ascorbic acid and D.D.T.
