CENSUS OF BRITISH INDUSTRY

PLAN FOR MORE TRADE STATISTICS

LONDON, January 21. Moving in the House of Commons the second reading of the Statistics of Trade Bill, the president of the Board of Trade (Sir Stafford Cripps) said that the purpose was to bring up to date the Government’s central collection of statistics to provide reliable information for industry, merchants. and financiers and give the Government a better appreciation of the country’s economy and enable it to fulfil its full employment policy. “This is not a deep, dark plan for preparing to nationalise the retail trade,” he said. “We have no intention of nationaiisine Ihe distributing trades.” Sir Stafford Cripps added that the proposed census would apply to everything that was retail to the public. The statistics of the bill provided for a census of production and a census of distribution. The census of production, which was now taken every five years, would be annual.
