COLLIERY OFFICIAL DISMISSED
HAULED DOWN BOARD’S FLAG (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 21. A former colliery owner, Mr George Elliott, who was suspended from his job as unit controller of the Grange Ash colliery near Huddersfield for hauling down the National Coal Board’s flag, was yesterday dismissed because he refused to obey the board’s order to replace the flag. The colliery had been in the Elliott family'-s possession since 1887. “I took the flag down because I felt it was celebrating our downfall,” said Mr Elliott. He added that he would now devote his whole time to farming, which was formerly his hobby. U.S. LIVING COSTS RISE (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Jan. 20. The Bureau of Labour Statistics announced that higher prices for allother living essentials have more than offset lower prices for food. The retail price of living essentials throughout the nation in December was 15 per cent, higher than in June, 1946.
