BUSY SHIPYARDS IN BRITAIN

LARGE TONNAGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION (Rec. 8.45 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 21. British shipyards are busier than they have been since shortly after the first world war, and are now building 52 per cent, of the world’s ships. Lloyd’s shipbuilding return shows the total gross tonnage under construction on December 31, was 1,937,000, which has not been exceeded since March 31, 1922. and is nearly 325.000 tons greater than on December 31. 1945, and 62,000 tons greater than on September 30. 1946. About one quarter of the present construction is for registration or sale abroad. Tonnage building abroad on December 31, 1946. totalled 1.741.000 although figures for Danzig, Germany. Japan. Poland, and Russia were not available and those for France were incomplete. Of 167.000 tons building in the Dominions, Canada accounts for 110.000 tons. .
