PASSAGES TO AUSTRALIA
MANY APPLICATIONS Many applications for alternative transport to Australia have been received within the last few days at the Union Steam Ship Company’s offices at Christchurch from people who had booked passages on the Wanganella for its return voyage. Officials of the company stated yesterday that the only other ships available were the Dominion Monarch (which was sailing about January 31) and the Rangitiki (which would probably be sailing between January 27 and January 31). In the first place bookings had been heavy on these ships, and it was not known how successful the applications would be; but as many applications as possible were being sent to the head office at Wellington for consideration. Some requests were also being received for passages by the .Tasman Empire Airways service; but this had already been heavily booked. Inquiries for luggage which had been left by passengers on the Wangftndlla after she went aground were also received by the company; but it was explained that because of the heavy swell yesterday it could not be taken off. Every effort would be made, to move the luggage as soon as possible and to restore it to its owners.
